Sweet Magnolias fans, don’t pour it out just yet!
Given the way that season 2 ended (more on that later), it’s fair to assume that we’ll be back in Serenity for another round — but Netflix isn’t making any promises just yet. That’s right, as of now, the future of Sweet Magnolias is just as uncertain as Helen’s love life. And sure, it may feel like Netflix will keep us waiting ’til the cows come home, but we’re certain that a season 3 renewal is around the corner. In the meantime, read up on everything we know so far about Sweet Magnolias season 3, including our best guesses at the show’s release date and cast changes.
When is the Sweet Magnolias season 3 release date?
Again, Netflix still hasn’t picked up Sweet Magnolias for another season. That means that if — and only if — it’s renewed, we can expect to return to Serenity sometime in early 2023. This past season was released in February 2022, so we’re assuming they’ll follow the same schedule to give us a sunny escape in the depths of winter. At least that’s what we’re hoping for!
Will the entire Sweet Magnolias cast return for season 3?
As far as we know, it seems like the whole cast is on board to return for another season, including:
- JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Maddie Townsend
- Brooke Elliot as Dana Sue Sullivan
- Heather Headley as Helen Decatur
- Chris Klein as Bill Townsend
- Justin Breuning as Cal Maddox
- Carson Rowland as Tyler Townsend
- Logan Allen as Kyle Townsend
- Anneliese Judge as Annie Sullivan
- Chris Medlin as Isaac Downey
- Dion Johnstone as Erik Whitley
- Jamie Lynn Spears as Noreen Fitzgerald
- Brandon Quinn as Ronnie Sullivan
- Michael Shenefelt as Ryan Wingate
What will season 3 be about?
The next season will likely pick up right where season 2 left off — at least that’s what JoAnna Garcia Swisher is predicting. In an interview with ET, she shared that it’ll probably start “close to where we left off, ’cause I don’t think you can come back months later and say, ‘Whatever happened with Helen?’ and ‘Is Justin in jail?’ Why not go big or go home?”
If she’s right (and we’re sure she is), then season 3 will address all the major questions that we have following the season 2 finale’s cliffhanger ending. First on our list: Will Helen accept Ryan’s proposal or continue to pursue Erik? And while fans are already starting to pick sides, Heather Headley tells TVLine that she sees it “going either way,” especially given her history with both men. But don’t expect a decision right away: Showrunner and executive producer Sheryl Anderson confirms to EW that she “knows what she’s going to say, but I wouldn’t guess that timeline.”
Then there’s Cal and Maddie, Serenity’s other ever-so-complicated couple. Throughout the second season, we learned more about Cal’s past — er, not quite — anger issues and watched as Maddie distanced herself from him as a result. Things really came to a head in the season finale when Cal got arrested after winding up in a fight at Sullivan’s. In an interview with Glamour, Sheryl says the incident sparked two important questions: “How do you build trust? And once you break trust, can you rebuild trust?” If all goes according to plan, the coming season will be an “opportunity to get into that.”
Let’s not forget about Dana Sue. With Ronnie back in her corner, everything seemed to be going well for her — until Miss Frances passed away and left her a bunch of money. This seemed like great news until people started to go after the Sullivan’s for reasons unbeknownst to us, even going so far as to slash the tires of Dana Sue’s van. Who would do such a thing? We don’t know yet, but it seems like we’re about to find out.
That’s not even half of it, though: There are so many other storylines that are just starting to unfold, including Issac’s recent discovery about his birthparents and Ty’s future without baseball (which, maybe just maybe, includes Annie).
