Katy Perry just had to say something when fellow American Idol judge Luke Bryan messed up the lyrics to one of her songs.
It all began during last week’s episode of the ABC singing competition show when Katy, Luke and Lionel Richie had a little bit of downtime in between auditions for season 5 (the show’s 20th season overall). While Katy was enjoying a hot beverage, Luke shot up from his seat singing her 2010 hit song “Firework.” Before the country music star got too far into the uplifting anthem though, Katy stopped him and clarified that he was singing the wrong lyrics.
“It’s not up, up, up and it’s not uh, uh, uh,” she said.
“Well, what is it then? Because I’ve been dying to know all of these years,” he responded.
Katy replied: “It’s awe, awe, awe. A, W, E.”

After confirming that it is, indeed, a term in the dictionary, Katy extended her public service announcement to fans watching from home. “It’s awe, awe, awe, everybody,” she said. “Get it right! It’s not fireworks, it’s firework.”
In other words, the correct lyrics are: “‘Cause baby, you’re a firework / Come on show ’em what you’re worth / Make ’em go, “awe, awe, awe” / As you shoot across the sky.”
In case folks missed her news, she also shared the moment on her Instagram reiterating the song lyrics in the caption. “FOR THE OFFICIAL RECORD ☝🏻it is AWE not UP it is FIREWORK not FIREWORKSSS,” Katy wrote.
What’s more, the Grammy-nominated artist also resurfaced a 2012 article about “Firework” being inspired by American novelist and poet Jack Kerouac’s work. More specifically, Katy’s lyrics were influenced by a line from his 1957 book, On the Road, which reads in part: “Burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars … and everybody goes, ‘Awww!’”
After hearing Katy set the record straight about her single “Firework,” her fans rushed to the comments section to applaud her for it. “KATY U TELL EM ITS NOT FIREWORKS ITS FIREWORK 💜💜💜💜,” one person wrote. “Not Luke thinking [it’s] ‘up’ omg 💀,” another added. “This banter 😂,” a different fan said.
Others also shared that they, too, have encountered folks who don’t know the lyrics by heart. “People saying fireworks always made me feel 🥴,” a follower commented. “How do people not know this 😭,” someone else wrote.
Perhaps, now Katy’s message will reach all corners of the internet and everyone will be on the same page at her next concert.
