Just like with your hair, taking care of your skin starts in the shower. And we don’t just mean cleansing your face; your body needs some TLC, too. When shopping for a good body wash, you generally want to look for “a gentle formulation with mild surfactants that cleanse without over stripping skin’s oil, and hydrating ingredients like glycerin, ceramides and hyaluronic acid that help to add moisture back into skin,” says Jenny Liu, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “Creams and unscented formulas are less irritating and more suitable body washes for sensitive skin, while gel cleansers foam more effectively and are better at removing impurities, bacteria, dirt and sebum from skin.”
We know the drugstore body wash aisle (and web searches) can be overwhelming, so we tapped the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab‘s product testing experts for their top picks. In the GH Beauty Lab’s most recent body wash test, 24 products were tested by our consumer panel first and the top eight were then tested further in the Lab on criteria including scent, lather, moisturizing capabilities, ease of use and how clean skin felt afterward. Our list of the best body washes you can buy to keep you smelling good all day includes GH Beauty Lab top-tested products, GH Beauty Award winners and pro picks from top dermatologists.

Best Overall Body Wash
Nourishing Body Wash with Yuzu & Rice Water
- Innovative reduced waste packaging
- Non-irritating
- Leaves skin clean but not dry
- Soft lather and scent
This groundbreaking MyKirei by Kao body wash is a gently sudsing gel with a subtle citrus-floral aroma encased in first-of-its-kind air-inflated packaging to reduce waste. GH Beauty Lab assessment confirmed that the packaging has up to 47% less plastic than that of similar-size products. In a clinical study, the cleanser didn’t irritate even sensitive skin; testers found that it lathered well and rinsed clean without overdrying skin. “The light and foamy lather feels soft,” one of our testers reported.
2
Best Value Body Wash
Body Wash Deep Moisture Cleanser
- Affordably-priced
- Sustainable packaging
- Easy to use
- Softens skin
A winner of GH’s Sustainable Innovation Awards and an editor favorite, Dove’s Deep Moisture Body Wash has received (not surprisingly) top scores in many of our tests. Testers loved that it truly softened skin, thanks to its gentle cleansers and moisturizers. Our Lab experts also applaud the bottle, which is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic and is super easy to pour with one hand in the shower with a flip-top cap. The best part: the budget-friendly price!

Best Body Wash for Acne
Body Clear Body Wash
- Combats breakouts
- Bargain price
- Purifying gel formula
- Not suitable for dry skin
When you experience body breakouts, it’s key to start your treatment in the shower with a body wash that contains acne-fighting active ingredients. “While acneic skin can also be sensitive and many washes can be drying, a little salicylic acid can go a long way,” Dr. Evans says. She recommends Neutrogena’s wash, which contains 2% salicylic acid in a gel formula to thoroughly diminish excess oil.
4
Best Body Wash for Sensitive Skin
Skin Calming Body Wash
- Gentle formula
- Bargain price
- Prevents dryness and itchiness
- Fragrance-free
- May be too rich for oily or acne-prone skin
A great value and great for easily irritated skin? Yes, really. GH Beauty Director April Franzino loves this Eucerin body wash for all of its calming benefits. “A body wash made with skin-nourishing plant oils like soybean and castor seed but no soap surfactants, which can dehydrate and irritate skin, this formula is also free of fragrance and cleanses well yet doesn’t leave skin feeling dry, tight, and itchy,” she says.
5
Best Body Wash for Dry Skin
Do Son Shower Oil
- Intensely hydrating
- Luxurious formula
- Expensive
- May be too rich for oily or acne-prone skin
While some people suffer from dry skin only in winter months, others need a hydrating body wash formula all year round. Tracy Evans, M.D., dermatologist and medical director of Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology in San Francisco recommends using oil-based cleansers to add hydration back into the skin. Enter Diptyque’s shower oil, a favorite of Dr. Evans, which contains nourishing apricot seed oil, and transforms into a lush foam when it mixes with water.
6
Best Smelling Body Wash
Moisturizing Cocoa Butter Body Wash
- Appealing scent
- Rich, creamy texture
- Leaves skin soft
- Gentle formula
This sweet-smelling body wash from Tone got rave reviews in GH Beauty Lab testing for its fruity scent across the board from all of its testers. “It had a mango scent which made me happy in the dread of the morning,” one reported. Another raved: “The scent was fantastic! It was so tropical and fruity smelling. The lather was also rich and creamy and spread easily over my skin.” Testers also found that it left skin feeling hydrated and clean, rinsed off easily and wasn’t irritating.
7
Best Body Wash for Glowing Skin
AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser
- Exfoliates skin to brighten
- Smooths texture
If you are going for the glow, exfoliation is key to revealing bright skin. Dr. Evans recommends using an exfoliating cleanser, like this one from SkinMedica, which contains both alpha and beta hydroxy acids to remove dead skin cells from the top layer of skin. Plus, she likes that it contains “biodegradable granules” making it better for the environment than some other body scrubs.
8
Best Body Wash for Itchy Skin
Moringa Cleansing Balm
- Soothes itchiness
- Rich formula
- Also works on the face
“Oil or cream based cleansers are a great way to heal itchy skin,” says Dr. Evans. She suggests this balm cleanser from Emma Hardie, which contains soothing moringa oil and comes with a soft cleansing cloth. While it’s designed for the face, it works wonders on itchy, irritated skin on your body, too.
9
Best Body Wash for Keratosis Pilaris
Body Wash with Salicylic Acid
- Exfoliates without stripping skin
- Helps smooth bumps
- Fragrance-free
Curious about those little red bumps on your upper arms, sometimes called “chicken skin”? This condition is called keratosis pilaris, and “can be hard to treat, as it is caused by a genetic propensity to have tiny hair follicles on our bodies — specifically on the back of your arms and legs — that get clogged,” Dr. Evans explains. “The best washes to treat KP contain salicylic or alpha and beta hydroxy acids.” CeraVe’s wash contains both salicylic acid to treat the bumps and ceramides to protect the skin barrier and keep skin hydrated. “It actually improved the appearance of my KP in one go, which, in my 20 plus years trying to manage it, is the best and quickest results I’ve gotten,” one reviewer shares.
10
Best Fragrance-Free Body Wash
Gentle Body Wash
- Extremely gentle formula
- No fragrance or masking scent
Don’t love intense fragrance? Vanicream’s body wash is ideal for those whose skin needs a super gentle formula with no scent at all. “Sensitive skin needs to be treated with care, including in body washes that contain no fragrance, masking fragrance or irritants,” explains Dr. Evans. In fact, when Beauty Lab chemist Sabina Wizemann‘s skin started getting itchy from her usual body wash, she turned to this wash. “It leaves my skin smooth and soft and, most importantly, comfortable,” Wizemann says. “I appreciate it as a down-to-earth body wash, with no bells and whistles; it is packed with glycerin and uses mild coco-glucoside surfactant.”
11
Best Body Wash for Eczema
Soothing Body Wash for Dry Skin
- Soothes and softens skin
- Great for extra dry and itchy skin
While it’s important for everyone to keep their skin barrier intact to maintain healthy and hydrated skin, it’s extra crucial for those with eczema to minimize irritation and flareups. Ceramides are a top ingredient for ideal skin barrier function and nourishment. “This is a great product for eczema sufferers with three essential ceramides and omega oil,” Dr. Evans says. Plus, it contains hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate and niacinamide to calm skin.
12
Best Moisturizing Body Wash
Nourishing Body Wash (Pack of 2)
- Measurably hydrates skin for hours
- No need to use moisturizer after
This body wash from Dove combines a rich moisturizer and cleanser in one. Infused with argan oil beads, the formula softens dry skin after just one wash, GH Beauty Lab testing found. “My skin was as smooth as if I’d applied a moisturizer,” a tester raved. “I used it at night, and my skin still felt moisturized in the morning,” another marveled. In Lab testing, this body wash moisturized skin for four hours — no additional lotion required.
13
Best Soothing Body Wash
Maximum Recovery Body Wash & Soak in Relaxing Reset
- Relaxing scent and formula
- Doubles as a bath soak
- Bargain price
Transform your bath or shower into a spa-like experience with this body wash and soak in one from Degree, a GH Beauty Award winner. The combo of the lavender extract and Epsom salts helps to relax your senses and body. The “scent was like aromatherapy,” and the “lather was incredible,” testers said.

Best Multi-Use Body Wash
Authentic African Black Soap
- Bottle made of recycled plastic
- Great value
- Also works as a face wash
- Large size
Talk about a jack of all (cleansing) trades. This GH Sustainable Innovation Awards winner from Alaffia can be used as body wash, facial cleanser and a shaving gel. Our experts love that the brand focuses more on performance and value than on extra packaging — while still prioritizing sustainable materials. Plus, the bottle, which is made of recycled plastic, contains 32 ounces of product which will last a long time, no matter how many ways you use it.
15
Best Sustainable Body Wash
Atlantic Kelp and Magnesium Anti-Fatigue Body Wash
- Bottle made from recycled materials
- Refreshing herbal scent
If you want to go “green,” this ec0-conscious body wash is GH Beauty Lab Executive Director Birnur Aral, Ph.D.‘s top pick. “The bottle is made of 100% recycled plastic, 20% of which comes from ocean plastic, and the pump has no metal spring, so the packaging is fully recyclable as-is,” she says. “Plus, I love the uplifting herbal-botanical scent, a mix of geranium, rosemary and sage.”
16
Best Lathering Body Wash
Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Body Wash (Pack of 3)
- Mild fragrance
- Luxurious lather
- Easy to use
The perfect pick for those who prefer a light fragrance over a strong perfume-like scent, Aveeno’s body wash also rated best for its lather in GH Beauty Lab testing. Testers described the formula as “silky” and “creamy.” Users also thought that it was easy to use – simple to dispense, non-irritating and rinsed off easily from skin. Lab testing found that it didn’t disturb the skin’s barrier function. “I am very sensitive to strong florals and fruits and this wash was light, fresh, clean and very pleasant,” says one tester. “The lather was creamy without being too heavy”.
17
Best Natural Body Wash
Everyday Shea Body Wash in Vanilla Mint
- Contains naturally-derived ingredients
- Refreshing scent
- Large size
A GH Beauty Award winner, Alaffia’s silky, lightly sudsing gel formulation is made from just six mild ingredients, including plant-based coconut oil and shea butter as well as vanilla extract and spearmint leaf oil for scent. “It smelled invigorating but not overpowering, and my skin didn’t feel tight post-shower,” a tester commented.
How we choose the best body washes
The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab has been testing skincare products for decades to make the most informed and scientifically proven recommendations for readers. The GH Beauty Lab’s most recent test body wash test included evaluating 24 products, spending over 90 hours on in-Lab testing and then tallying the responses from 520 consumer surveys.
GH Beauty Lab scientists first label-masked the bottles to eliminate bias and then distributed them to a panel of consumer testers, who tried the products at home and evaluated them on factors including ease of use, lather, scent and look and feel of skin after use. In the Lab, expertse use state-of-the-art tools like the Corneometer device, which measures skin hydration levels, to gauge a product’s ability to moisturize (or dehydrate) skin. GH Beauty Lab experts chose the picks featured in this article based on this data, and also considered GH Seal holders, GH Beauty Award winners, editor favorites and dermatologist-recommended products.
What to look for when shopping for the best body washes
Each skin type has different needs when it comes to body wash and certain ingredients and formulations can make a big difference. Dr. Evans shares what to seek out for your specific skin:
✔️ For dry skin: Hydrating ingredients (like hyaluronic acid, ceramides and glycerin) and oil-based formulas will help add moisture back into dehydrated skin.
✔️ For glowing skin: Look for an exfoliating body wash that contains alpha and beta hydroxy acids; these will exfoliate skin, removing dead skin cells to brighten the overall tone.
✔️ For sensitive skin: Choose gentle body washes that contain no fragrance, masking fragrance or irritants.
✔️ For eczema: Ceramide-based washes help to keep the skin barrier intact and healthy, which is especially important with this skin condition. Try minimizing shower or bath time and avoid using hot water to prevent drying out skin.
✔️ For acne: Opt for body washes that are made with salicylic acid to reduce breakouts.
✔️ For keratosis pilaris: Treat this chronic condition with a body wash formula that contains salicylic or alpha and beta hydroxy acids.
✔️ For itchy skin: Soothe itch by cleansing with cream or oil-based body washes.
