Everything is starting to come together for the Pearsons as the This Is Us season 6 finale on May 24 draws nearer. But there’s still one question that’s gone unanswered about Kate (Chrissy Metz) — and after last night, fans are now especially worried.
In the third to last episode of the NBC series, fans watched as Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Kate held a family meeting to decide the next steps for their ailing mother Rebecca (Mandy Moore) following the heartbreaking death of their stepdad Miguel (Jon Huertas). Since Rebecca elected Kate to make all decisions about her care, the burden fell to the Pearson sister to navigate the conflicting wishes of her two brothers.
In the end, we see the Big Three agree on an arrangement — Kevin and Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge) decide to move into the Big Three home with Rebecca, while Madison (Caitlin Thompson) and Elijah (Adam Korson) will move to the East Coast to keep everyone close together. Meanwhile, Nicky (Griffin Dunne) and Edie (Vanessa Bell Calloway) will live at the cabin and be there for extra support and help.
All seemed well by the end of the episode. But as one eagle-eyed fan pointed out on Twitter, Kate is still nowhere to be found in the famous flash-forward scene central to the series finale. Screenshotting a moment shown in next week’s promo for the penultimate episode titled “The Train,” the entire family appears to be together, except for Kate.
This, of course, begs the big question … where is Kate? Before freaking out too much, we must remember that in that same flash-forward sequence, we’ve seen Toby previously say that Kate was on her way to the house with their son Jack (Blake Stadnik) — in other words, there’s a pretty low chance we’re going to see Kate get killed off right before the series finale. That being said, it doesn’t mean she’s going to make it to the house before Rebecca dies, as another fan warned online.
All we can say is get ready for something devastating to occur, because Mandy told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show recently that “you might need a day off from work after next week’s [episode].”

Further, Mandy said she actually threw up reading the script for the second-to-last episode of the series. “It’s really close to the bone for me,” she explained. “This has been my life for the last six years and it’s like I have to simultaneously say goodbye to the character, to my family and friends on set.”
