I’m just going to throw this out there: I hate getting dressed. And I especially hate getting dressed during the hot, sticky months of summer. As a busy working mom, I have deep-seated envy for people who have figured out how to wear a uniform (a.k.a. the art of wearing the exact same thing every day). Dresses are the obvious solution for simplifying the morning struggle on hot summer days, but I could never find a style that hit on all my summer wardrobe needs: durable but breathable fabric, a comfortable but figure-flattering fit, casual enough for the beach but cute enough for a dinner out.
Then I stumbled across the Grecerelle Casual Loose Pocket Maxi Dress on Amazon. A best-seller in the site’s clothing category, this dress has thousands of 5-star ratings, and I’m here to confirm that it’s the epitome of lazy summer style. At just $27, the Grecerelle maxi has become my go-to summer wardrobe staple — it comes in every color known to man plus a handful of patterns, and I currently own four of them (yes, four). Now that I get dressed in the exact same thing every weekend, I never have to waste time figuring out what to wear. So, basically, I’m living the dream.
One of the best things about my secret summer style weapon is that the fit is super flattering. The billowy silhouette is extremely forgiving, but somehow still manages to show off my curves (read: I don’t look like I’m wearing a potato sack). New moms in particular agree: “After giving birth to my daughter, I have felt very, very self-conscious about my ‘mom body,’” says one reviewer. “However, this dress is so comfortable and very flattering. I looked awesome and actually felt pretty again!”
Available in sizes XS to XXL, the dress fits true-to-size, but I’d recommend sizing up if you want a looser look. I also love that the mid-thigh slit and semi-open back show off just the right amount of skin, but don’t prevent me from wearing a regular bra or chub rub-thwarting slip shorts underneath.
The fabric also has a lot going for it, given how inexpensive it is. Made of 95% rayon and 5% spandex, it’s super-soft, stretchy, and PJ-level comfortable (seriously, I’ve actually slept in it a few times). As for coverage, I only own this dress in dark colors, but in my experience, even though the fabric is lightweight and breezy, it’s still thick enough that you can’t see my underwear through it. It’s also worth noting that this maxi does not wrinkle easily, which has made packing for summer vacations a total breeze.
But let’s get to my favorite part: the pockets. They can’t handle the heavy weight of say, a phone, but they’re perfect if you happen to be walking the dogs and need to bring along a few extra doggy waste bags or a house key.
While my new summer weekend uniform is a bit too casual to pull off at work, pairing this dress (which also comes in sleeveless and long-sleeve versions) with flat sandals or wedges is the perfect look for running errands, covering up at the pool, or lounging around at an outdoor barbecue. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to buy this dress in a few more colors before summer is over.
