  • February 21, 2022

After 15 seasons and 324 episodes, Criminal Minds fans are more than ready for the show to be revived. Most recently, many have been looking at actor Joe Mantegna, who played Senior Supervisory Special Agent David Rossi, for much-needed answers.

From 2005 to 2020, the CBS procedural drama followed a group of FBI criminal profilers who pursued unknown subjects (unsubs) as part of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU). After starting off with six main cast members in its first season, the hit series captivated viewers with heartfelt personal storylines and action-packed scenes. Unsurprisingly, it built a loyal fanbase that still stands by them to this day.

When fans said an emotional goodbye to the show in February 2020, many felt unsatisfied with the shortened 15th and final season. But hope was restored when Paramount+ announced a Criminal Minds revival was in the works the next year in February 2021. That said, after rumors started floating around that it might be “dead,” news broke in February 2022 that it wasn’t — and Joe threw his support behind it without having to say a word.

On February 1, Paramount+’s President for Original Scripted Series Nicole Clemens revealed that the Criminal Minds reboot was “still very much in development” and there would be “more to share soon on that, but it is alive and well,” per Deadline. The next day, on February 2, Joe tweeted out a link to an E! News story about the latest development, and Criminal Minds fans could hardly contain their excitement.

“SOOO Mr Mantegna-Rossi …. is that a for sure ‘YES’ it’s coming back WITH most of the same cast members?!? That part is still shrouded in mystery… But YOU yourself posted it, sooo….🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻,” one person wrote. “JOE DON’T PLAY WITH [OUR] FEELINGS AND SAY SOMETHING,” another added. “JOE?? 👀👀👀👀,” a different fan said.

Though he didn’t open up to his Twitter followers about what was going on behind the scenes, Deadline later reported on February 4 that six actors had committed to coming back to the series, including Joe, A.J. Cook, Paget Brewster, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler and Adam Rodriguez.

According to the outlet, the returning cast reached “general agreements” in November, and the actors are now waiting for negotiations to be done with the show’s executive producer and showrunner Erica Messer. Once that happens, the cast will most likely continue their multi-year contract talks.

As for who else might return, Criminal Minds fans probably shouldn’t get their hopes up about seeing actors Matthew Gray Gubler, who played Spencer Reid, and Daniel Henney, who portrayed Matt Simmons. Matthew has previously said he was ready to move on from the CBS series, while Daniel is now busy with Amazon Prime’s fantasy show The Wheel of Time. But could actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played Supervisory Special Agent Kate Callahan, possibly make a comeback? As far we as know, she hasn’t hinted at it, but there’s still time for her to sign up if she isn’t too busy with Fox’s drama 9-1-1!
