More than a month after Grey’s Anatomy season 18 went on its winter hiatus, viewers were caught off guard when the show’s official Twitter account shared a cryptic tweet on January 27. Though it didn’t mention the late fictional neurosurgeon by name, lots of folks believe it was about him.
The tweet was comprised of a series of 25 small blue boxes, captioned: “Not Wordle, just a sticky note.” The account was seemingly following the social media trend of sharing Wordle progress. However, fans think that the message holds a much deeper meaning than getting in on the latest online conversation. In case you haven’t played the word game before, Wordle is a game that gives players six chances to guess the daily word. With each incorrect answer, the player is given hints through colors.

The tweet reminded Grey’s fans of a memorable scene from the season 7 in which Derek and Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) get caught up with life and forget to go to City Hall to get married. So, after giving up their wedding to Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and Alex (Justin Chambers), Derek and Meredith write down their wedding vows on blue Post-it notes. Today, it’s still referred to Meredith and Derek’s Post-it wedding.
With that, folks immediately took to the comments to share their theories about Derek returning again in season 18.
One fan tweeted: “DEREK IS COMING BACK.” Another wrote: “Maybe Derek will come back or just play with our feelings.” A different follower said: “I don’t want to get my hopes up, but… the last time they published a POST IT Derek appeared on the beach.”
As viewers know, after he died in a car crash at the end of season 11 finale, Derek reunited with Meredith in season 17 when she was battling COVID-19. Before he came back though, the show’s tweeted a blue Post-it note with the message: “See you tonight.” Shortly after, Meredith met Derek on the beach and the two had a much-awaited heart-to-heart. Ultimately, he convinced her to wake up from her dreams and return to her real life.
So, is Grey’s giving fans another hint? It’s tough to say but given that has a handful of episodes remaining in season 18 and season 19 is officially happening, there might be more surprises in store. Who knows, maybe the writers will find a way to incorporate Derek in the storyline, and possibly include a soap opera worthy plot twist where the character is resurrected.
