Brace yourselves, Grey’s Anatomy fans, because things may get a bit catastrophic for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo).
Throughout the course of season 19, the hit ABC series has been slowly preparing for longtime character to make her season exit. Just last week, we saw Grey Sloan’s current chief of surgery fly to Boston to talk to former colleague Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) about possibly relocating and doing research on Alzheimer’s disease. But Meredith’s transition may have lasting effects, as hinted in a promo for Thursday night’s midseason finale and crossover event with the medical drama’s spinoff Station 19.
Titled “Thunderstruck,” both the attending doctors at Grey Sloan and members of Seattle Fire Department are seen dealing with the aftermath of a thunderstorm. “We are a level 1 trauma center in a lightning storm,” Dr. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) says while walking through the halls of the hospital. “You will see gnarly injuries.”

While that already has folks thinking ominous thoughts, one eerie moment had TV-goers on the edge of their seats. “Tragedy strikes one of our own,” the promo concludes, before panning to Meredith herself.
What does this mean exactly for Meredith? While nothing is ever certain on Grey’s Anatomy, viewers immediately began building a theory while simultaneously pleading for her safety.
“I think that the ‘tragedy strikes one of our own’ is about Meredith and her house. I think a lightning strikes it and it burns down. Maybe this is why she’s leaving after 19×07 (winter premiere) and returns for the season finale,” one fan hypothesized in the YouTube comments section. “Meredith first built her house with candles. Now it’s going to be on fire. Circle of life …” another person agreed. “PLEASE PROTECT MEREDITH, LET HER BE HAPPY INSTEAD OF A COMA OR SOMETHING,” a different follower begged.

Now, you may be wondering why dedicated watchers mentioned the possibility of Meredith’s house being destroyed. In yet another possible nod to the late Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), it’s a reference to the home the couple built together early on in the show. A season 4 scene featured Meredith making a romantic grand gesture by leading Derek to an outline of their future house in candles.
While the house theory may or may not be a sure thing, it would make sense to time it to Meredith’s impending exit. She’s already debating leaving Grey Sloan for a life of research in Boston — this would just cement her decision even more.
Either way, the new episode is sure to lead us on quite the bumpy ride.
