Ozark‘s fourth and final chapter premiered not too long ago on Netflix, but fans of the crime drama are already awaiting news about when part two will come out. Unlike the show’s previous installments, season 4 of Ozark is comprised of 14 new episodes, which are split into two different parts. But why wasn’t the fourth season released all at the same time? According to Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy, this was an intentional decision to assure fans could say a satisfactory goodbye to the series.
Speaking with TVLine, the executive producer revealed that the two-part final season was a “compromise” between the producers and Netflix. “It was originally going to be 10, but we wanted a little bit more,” he told the outlet. “And then we kind of [arrived at] 14 together. Fourteen was something that, if divided up, would [allow] each part to feel substantial and distinct. And it felt like a good number where we could [finish out] the story but not overstay our welcome.”
In other words, the middle ground reached between the hit show and the streamer was in the fans’ best interest. With many folks already having trouble saying goodbye to the popular series (as seen on Twitter!), getting an additional four episodes allows more time to follow the Byrde family on their journey of white-collar crime.

For those still wondering, a premiere date for Ozark season 4 part 2 has not yet been announced. So far, part 1 follows the Byrde family’s attempt to break ties with the cartel and return to their hometown of Chicago. But Ruth (Julia Garner) may have caused irreversible damage to their plans when she lets intel slip while on her ongoing quest for vengeance.
As for what might be next, season 4 part 2 may build upon Wendy (Laura Linney)’s political ambitions. Back in the second season of the hit series, the Byrde’s matriarch expressed interest in running for office. However, due to her family’s money laundering, her goals have yet to be explored. But even if she ever gets the opportunity to do, it could compete with her husband Marty’s (Jason Bateman) longtime desire for peace.

As we wait for the second part of the season and to see what the future holds for the Byrdes, the showrunner shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he has known for sometime “the emotional landing point” he wanted to end on. According to him, Marty and Wendy will experience this firsthand in the upcoming installment.
“I always want closure. I don’t want to feel messed with. I want to feel like, ‘OK, that was the end,'” he told the outlet. “So hopefully people will feel closure by the end — whether they like it or not, I don’t know.”
Chris continued: “In terms of tone, we’re going deeper into the family and their bonds. Is family the ultimate bond? Is friendship? Is marriage? At what point is it almost unhealthy to stay, even if you love somebody? We’re going to delve into that with Marty and Wendy. Hopefully, the back half will still be fun and exciting, but also really emotional for the Byrdes and Ruth.”
