Shopping for skincare products meant for mature skin can sometimes feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Why do the women in skincare ads for fine line-fighting products look 25? Are these products actually going to work on skin that’s already experiencing severe dryness or wrinkles? If you’ve had these thoughts while scrolling through the seemingly endless selection of “anti-aging” products, you’re not alone.

After working in the beauty industry for decades and having seen too many skincare products from other companies with false claims to turn back time, three beauty executives combined forces to create a line of products that speak specifically to the skin concerns of women in their 40s, 50s, and beyond. SeeMe Beauty, a Good Housekeeping seal holder, was founded in 2019 by beauty veterans Tiffanie Papp (the resident beauty junkie), Alexis Schrimpf (the designer), and Christi Putman (the team scientist), to address post-menopausal skin.

“The majority of skincare products are targeted to younger women in order to attract new users, and most product testing cuts off around age 45,” explains Putman. “The industry has been obsessed with younger consumers, and we want to change that.”

Women entering their 40s and 50s experience a number of skin problems, including excessive dryness, sagging, dullness, lack of radiance, and the potential for longer-lasting blemishes, too. During menopause, a woman’s body will undergo some major hormonal changes, including a significant decrease in estrogen levels. “A decrease in estrogen production can lead to dry, itchy skin and loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin,” explains Dr. Catherine Chang, a board-certified plastic surgeon at Cassileth Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, California. “All of this ultimately leads to thinning of the skin, especially in the face and neck, which leads to jowls and sagging of the skin. Additionally, the loss of collagen and the loss of fat that also occurs with menopause can lead to fine lines.”

Not only will you likely start to notice your skin changing as you enter menopause, but you’ll also notice your skincare products may not seem to be working the way they used to. “Our multi-decade clinical studies have told us that as our estrogen becomes depleted during menopause, there are real biological changes happening in our skin,” explains Putman. “Our skin ages six times faster than before and repairs itself five times slower. Most pertinently, as estrogen declines, our skin is ten times less responsive to anti-aging ingredients than before. And the skin all over our bodies thins.”

In order to cater to estrogen-depleted skin, the trio at SeeMe Beauty needed to find the ingredients that worked best at treating and improving post-menopausal skin. “In clinical testing at SeeMe Beauty, we found five ingredients that work to reduce accelerated aging in estrogen-depleted skin, and we used them to create the dynamic SeeMe ComplexTM that is the foundation for all our products,” explains Putman. The SeeMe ComplexTM contains skin-loving ingredients including niacinamide, avocado oil, dill extract, turmeric, and the hero ingredient, artichoke leaf extract.

According to Putman, artichoke leaf extract actually works better and faster on estrogen-depleted skin than it does on younger skin. “While most ingredients don’t work as well as we approach menopause, artichoke leaf extract has been shown to be effective at reducing inflammation brought on by estrogen loss.”

Plus, artichoke leaf extract contains antioxidants such as vitamin C, and antioxidants are important to combat free radical damage that can cause oxidative stress at the cellular level, according to Dr. Chang. “Antioxidants help to reduce [visible signs of] pigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles,” she explains.

The SeeMe Beauty Smooth Out Recovery Serum is the brand’s most popular product, as the combination of ingredients, including moisturizing hyaluronic acid, pack a powerful punch to help restore vitality to estrogen-depleted skin. So far, it’s been garnering rave reviews on the SeeMe site.

“This serum immediately moisturized and smoothed out my skin, and the benefits seem to get better over time,” said one reviewer. “I finally found something that works!”

“I have only been using this for a couple weeks, but I already know it makes a difference in the texture of my skin,” said another reviewer. “I’m 61 and need a lot of hydration. This is the ticket!”

You can use the serum morning and night, and to combat dry skin, Putman recommends using the serum first then following it up with one of their Call Me Hydra-Cream or the Sweet Dreams Night Cream. “Layering serum and moisturizer is often a new combo for women who now need to lock in extra benefits,” explains Putman.

So far, possibly the biggest benefit of the SeeMe Beauty product line is that women over 40 feel, well, seen, with reviewers cheering on the name and repurchasing proudly.
