It’s back to the pitch for a certain mustachioed soccer coach. Believe that the Emmy award-winning Ted Lasso will officially return to Apple TV+ for a third season.
Saturday Night Live alum Jason Sudeikis stars as the titular American soccer coach in the hit feel-good comedy series about the fictional British Richmond Football Club. There’s no question why it’s coming back with a third installment. Last fall, Ted Lasso scored big at the Emmys with a record-setting 20 nominations. What’s more, Jason won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Television Series at the Golden Globes and at the Critics Choice Awards. Unsurprisingly, the show also took home top honors.
Since its 2020 debut, Ted Lasso has charmed a massive fan following with biscuit day and Ted Lasso-isms. So, to fuel that excitement, we rounded up all the details you need to know about Ted Lasso season 3:
When is the Ted Lasso season 3 release date?
Fans can expect our favorite footballers to unite again onscreen as early as summer 2022, according to Us Weekly. Season 3 of Ted Lasso kicked off filming earlier this year, so more details are still to come.
Is season 3 the final season of Ted Lasso?
We hate to rain on your parade: Ted Lasso was only intended for a three-season arc. But, it may not be the final game plan after all …
“I think we’ve always meant it to be three seasons,” creator Brendan Hunt (who plays Coach Beard on the show) told Entertainment Weekly in June 2021. “I think it would be pretty cool if, in the face of how much everyone likes this show, that we stick to our guns and really just do three seasons.”
“But even as committed to that idea as Jason may have been, none of us were prepared to the degree to which people love this show,” he added. On the other hand, producer Liza Katzer left the possibility more open-ended. “We don’t know. We hope it goes on,” she told Deadline earlier this year in March. “Initially we were down for three, but it’s up in the air at the moment.”
So, you’re saying there’s a chance?
Who will be in Ted Lasso season 3?
*Season 2 spoilers ahead*
Though the show’s details are still unknown to us, Ted Lasso producer Kip Kroeger hinted at season 3 exploring the existing ensemble. “I think it’s just more of what everyone loves and what has worked and just going deeper into the characters … into the backstories,” he told Deadline. “We’re going to get a little more information about where they came from.”
Fellow producer and director Declan Lowney added, “Knowing those guys there’s bound to be a bunch of surprises, things you didn’t see coming, some curveballs in there.”
As for those key players we can bet on being on the roster:
- Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso
- Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca Welton
- Jeremy Swift as Leslie Higgins
- Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard
- Toheeb Jimoh as Sam Obisanya
- Cristo Fernández as Dani Rojas
- Kola Bokinni as Isaac
- Nick Mohammed as Coach Nathan “Nate” Shelley
- Juno Temple as Keely Jones
- Stephen Manas as Richard Montlaur
- Annette Badland as Mae
In April, Deadline reported that Jodi Balfour will be joining the ranks as Jack, a charming venture capitalist. Though thought to be benched after season 2, it’s also confirmed that both Sarah Niles (Dr. Sharon Fieldstone), who joined last season’s cast as the team psychologist, and James Lance (Trent Crimm), who played the dry-witted sports columnist, will factor heavily into the next 12 episodes.
As for that season 2 cliffhanger, Nick Mohammed (Nate Shelley) is also in the dark about what’s to come for his character. “I genuinely don’t know. I know bits but not the details,” he told Town & Country. “We’ll see if Nate manages to find his way back to Richmond.”
