More than two years since seeing Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) left distraught on an airport’s tarmac, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel officially returned to Amazon Prime Video with the highly anticipated season 4. But fans excited to see what happens next for their favorite stand-up comedian may notice that the 1950s period dramedy has undergone a change in its availability. If you’ve grown accustomed to breezing through episodes of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, you might have to practice patience during season 4 because the series switched up its schedule.
Ahead of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4 premiering on February 18, showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino revealed that the long-awaited installment will look a little different. Folks will remember that the first season came out in two parts comprised of eight episodes. The second and third season were then released a year a part with 10 and eight episodes, respectively. But unlike the past two years, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4 will be coming out in various parts.
Speaking with TVLine, Amy opened up about why she and her fellow executive producer/husband Daniel Palladino made this decision. To sum it up, instead of dropping all eight episodes of season 4 at once, the show will now release two episodes each week for a total of four weeks. In other words, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4 will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in its entirety a month from now or March 11.
But why? Well, Amy and Daniel want Maisel fans to enjoy the new season and take their time watching it.“We f–king love it,” Amy told the outlet. “Our show is dense. There’s a lot of s–t going on. And attention must be paid. We’re really happy that they are doing this.”
Daniel hinted that season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is doing things different this time around after he and Amy were inspired by a popular HBO Max series. “There was a time many years ago where people thought the weekly rollout thing was over because everyone wants to watch them all at once,” he told the outlet. “But then shows like Succession is getting even bigger, with the conversation growing from week to week.”
Daniel went on to echo Amy’s words about the new season’s depth. “We would not recommend anyone watch eight episodes of this show in a row in one sitting — or two sittings,” he continued. “We don’t even want television journalists to do that. It was not made to be consumed like that, at least not on the first viewing. So we’re good with what they’re trying here.”
According to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s most recent trailer, season 4 will explore a variety of possibilities for Midge. After being kicked off of her comedy tour in the season 3 finale, she has a lot to prove to everyone including herself. Fans will see Midge more determined than ever before. What’s more, Sophie (Jane Lynch) and Asher (Jason Alexande) will be back too.
While the new release schedule might take a bit to get used to, there is good reason to soak up every moment of the show now that Amazon announced that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will officially end with a fifth and final season. Currently, season 5 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is filming in New York and it will have 10 episodes.
“This series has meant so much to Prime Video and the effects of its success will be felt long after its final season,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said in a statement, per TVLine. “I can’t wait for fans and our worldwide Prime Video audience to savor each moment as we embark on the culmination of this groundbreaking and unforgettable series.”
