Jenna Bush Hager just issued a public apology for her Halloween performance this year … but it’s not for the reason you think.
During a Viva Las Vegas-themed Halloween episode of the Today show, Jenna channeled her inner diva by dressing up as pop star Céline Dion. Wearing a silver beaded gown and a blonde wig, she took over Rockefeller Plaza to perform a cover of the singer’s 1996 hit “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.” While she tried to give it her all in full costume, she later felt the need to apologize for her vocal skills not being quite on par to the Grammy winner.
“I do just want to just go ahead and make a public apology because nobody can sing Céline like Céline and I tried, but there is no way,” she told E! News shortly after the spectacle aired. “I adore her and I hope she can feel that.”
While Jenna had some reservations about the performance after the fact, some Today fans notably had a different opinion. They were so into the host’s interpretation of the song they felt the need to react via the show’s Instagram comments section.
“I don’t watch the Today show very often, but I had it on this morning and she rocked it!” one fan declared. “Céline, call your lawyer!!!” another follower joked. “Céline does not move like that!!! At all 😂,” a different person jested.
Despite having doubts about her overall performance, Jenna still felt proud to take on the iconic singer — even if it was for a few minutes. As she continued telling E! News, getting up onstage to perform one of Céline’s hits fulfilled a lifelong dream for her. “I’ve been practicing her music forever, so it was just incredible.”
Jenna’s take on Céline was just one element of the Today show‘s extravagant theme. Viewers saw Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie make a grand Cirque du Soleil entrance, with Craig Melvin practicing his boxing moves as Muhammad Ali. Al Roker and Willie Geist paid homage to musical legends Sammy Davis Jr. and Elvis Presley while Dylan Dreyer dressed up as musician Adelaide Herrmann. Rounding out the group were Carson Daly and Sheinelle Jones, who respectively dressed up as David Copperfield and a Las Vegas showgirl.
We can’t wait till next year to see how the Today show co-anchors will top this theme next. As for Jenna’s apology, we’re sure Céline felt the love!
