We updated this article in January 2023 to add information about each product, based on testing by the Good Housekeeping Institute. Our new picks are selected by the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, dermatologist recommendations and editor favorites.

Looking for a new makeup remover or just want to try a new gentle face cleanser? Look no further than micellar water. One of the biggest benefits of this non-stripping water is that it doesn’t require rinsing at all, making it especially suitable for sensitive skin types, says Dendy Engelman, M.D., a New York-based board-certified dermatologist. While micellar waters can be used in the evening to remove the day’s grime and gunk, they “are also a great morning cleanser that won’t strip skin,” says celebrity esthetician Jeannel Astarita.

Use micellar water is pretty straightforward: For best results, apply with a cotton pad or cloth, says Dr. Engelman. “Saturate the cotton pad with micellar water and gently wipe across your face,” she explains. Debris from your skin will land on the cotton pad, and voilà, all clean!

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab has tested hundreds of face cleansing and makeup removing products over the years, including micellar waters. In the Lab’s latest makeup remover test, our scientists evaluated properties such as efficacy, thoroughness and speed before dispersing product to 176 testers, who then tried products in their home and considered several factors after use. This list includes top-tested micellar water cleansers as well as expert-loved picks. Ahead, our 11 favorite micellar water cleansers, including picks for oily, combination, acne-prone and sensitive skin.

How we choose the best micellar waters

In the GH Beauty Lab’s most recent makeup remover test, which involved testing micellar waters, our scientists tallied 12,200 total data points to find the best of the best. The Lab tested how well they removed eyeliner from skin in one swipe and then measured the number of swipes needed to completely remove the eyeliner. Our scientists also evaluated their efficacy, thoroughness and speed in removing eyeliner from skin.

Afterward, 176 testers tried the products at home, taking into consideration ease of dispensing, application and rinsing off; texture; scent; perceived effectiveness in removing makeup; whether they caused irritation or breakouts; and the look and feel of skin after use.

The products included above are a combination of Lab test winners, dermatologist recommendations and editor favorites.

What to look for when shopping for the best micellar waters

To find the best micellar water for your skin type, take the following into consideration:

✔️ Formulas: Most micellar waters have similar formulas, Aral notes. True to their name, “They are mostly water (even if it lists a juice or distillate as first ingredient) and have a low concentration of a mild detergent,” she adds. So, they will likely all do the job of removing your makeup effectively.

✔️ Ingredients: Some micellar waters claim additional skin benefits such as hydration, “but a micellar water formula is unlikely to hydrate skin to such a degree that you can skip your daily moisturizer,” Aral says. So make sure you don’t skip moisturizing just because you’re using a micellar water!

Do you need to wash your face after using micellar water?

Technically, no. “These are designed so that you don’t have to wash afterwards,” explains Aral. “But if you still like to follow with your favorite cleanser or just water, you won’t be committing a crime.”

Can you use micellar water every day?

Yes! Just make sure you find the right formula for your skin, Aral advises. Once you’ve found the most effective one for you, “it can be used every day for removing makeup and dirt at the end of the day,” she says.
