Before Nick Lachey joined his wife, Vanessa Lachey (née Minnillo), on Netflix’s new dating show The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On, the couple went through a a similar experience.
In honor of The Ultimatum season 1 finale, the NCIS: Hawai’i actress opened up to the cast about the time she gave the 98 Degrees band member one last proposition. “I always said I was going to be that girl that would never give a man an ultimatum,” she said on the show. “We dated for five years. So, I finally said, ‘What are we doing?’ I had moved in with him, I had renovated his entire bachelor pad, there was a bar in the pool. Now, I’m like, ‘OK I want to put kids in the pool.'”
When this didn’t happen, Vanessa and Nick went their separate ways. But as you may have guessed, it wasn’t forever. Today, the duo has been married for more than 10 years and their solid foundation has led them to be marriage mentors on The Ultimatum and Love Is Blind. What’s more, Vanessa and Nick have three children: Camden, Brooklyn and Phoenix.
The beginning of their love story was a slow burn. The couple met in 2003 when Vanessa was the host of the popular music show Total Request Live (TRL). Nick at the time was a rising boyband star with his group 98 degrees.
At the time, Nick was married to singer and actress Jessica Simpson. Vanessa was also in a long-term relationship. It was Vanessa’s duty on TRL to report on the current celebrity “it” couples. In other words, Nick and Vanessa’s relationship was strictly business during their early encounters.
Fast forward, in November 2005, Nick and Jessica announced that they were divorcing after three years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in June 2006. Inspired after his personal life, Nick wrote and released his pop rock ballad “What’s Left of Me” as the first single of his second solo album of the same name. When it came time to creating the accompanying music video, Vanessa was tapped to play the role of a heartbreaker.

According to E! News, during a 2006 episode of MTV’s Making the Video, Vanessa told the cameraman: “He’s a gem … mini-crush.” The music video was a pivotal moment in their relationship because it marked the beginning of their romance. “That’s what made it no longer friends and it got romantic,” Vanessa said in a 2017 Billboard interview.
Following their first date in the summer of 2006, the pair went public on New Year’s Eve 2007 when they shared a kiss on MTV’s New Year’s Eve show. However, the path to marriage wasn’t an easy one. As previously mentioned, after several years of dating, Vanessa and Nick briefly split in the summer of 2009. But two months later, the couple “patched things up.”
The next fall, in November 2010, Nick got down on one knee and proposed to Vanessa. Their journey to the altar was captured on camera for the TLC show Nick and Vanessa’s Dream Wedding. Nick and Vanessa became husband and wife on July 15, 2011.

Now, after knowing one another for 19 years, being together for 15 and married for 11, they’ve been able to share their relationship expertise while hosting The Ultimatum and Love Is Blind. The latter Netflix dating show places single folks in “pods” to date and find a potential spouse. But the participants begin their courtship without seeing the face of their partner. The couples eventually meet in-person when they’re engaged.
During an appearance on Strahan, Sara and Keke, Nick explained the early stages of their relationship was similar to the Love is Blind contestants. “We actually spent a lot of time getting to know each other on the phone, kind of the old-school way,” he said on the show. “You actually got to know somebody by spending hours and hours talking through everything and what made you tick, and it really kind of was the foundation for our relationship.”
It’s clear that the Lacheys are a Hollywood couple built to last, and that fans of the two will be able to hear more about their tips for a successful marriage through The Ultimatum and Love Is Blind.
