Criminal Minds fans can rejoice, because the BAU is sticking around for a little while longer. But there’s already one request, and it comes in the form of former cast member Matthew Gray Gubler.
Dedicated viewers received a major surprise on January 12, when the procedural drama dropped some epic news on social media. Posting a current photo of SSA David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), unit chief Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) and Dr. Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler), the show excitedly announced that Paramount+ renewed Criminal Minds: Evolution for new season 2 episodes.
“Wheels up for another season!!! 🎉 #CriminalMinds,” read the post on the show’s official Instagram.
But with this big reveal, they also made one major request. For the next season, fans want to see Matthew return to TV as Dr. Spencer Reid.
“PLEASE HAVE REID IN THIS NEW SEASON. 🙏 YESSSSSSS MAKE ROOM FOR MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER,” one person wrote in the comments section. “YAASSSS!!!!? 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 for a Reid comeback next year 😬,” another added. “YAASSS I just hope Matthew [decides] to join y’all for the next season!!” a different follower added.
Now, that Criminal Minds: Evolution has the green light for a season 2, it’s definitely possible viewers will get to see the boy genius back in action. And while he hasn’t appeared so far in the new reboot, it does mention his whereabouts of working in another division. But since the actor himself hasn’t shared his own update, fans will need to wait and see. What we do know is that he’s busy working on his Rumple Buttercup merchandise line, based on his 2019 best-selling children’s book.

As far as what to expect from a new season of Criminal Minds: Evolution, that is to be determined. But Paramount+ is excited to continue the franchise, with TVLine reporting that filming will begin sometime later this year.
“We’re thrilled to bring even more twisted storylines to our loyal fans of Criminal Minds: Evolution with the order of another season,” Tanya Giles, chief programming officer of Paramount Streaming, said in an official statement. “The series has always been a consistent top performer for Paramount+ and fans have quickly embraced this new season with its more serialized elements. There are still many dark twists and turns yet to come for the BAU this season and we can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store.”
Well, sign us up … and hopefully, Matthew as well.
