Jeopardy! fans, we’re about to head back to our high school days … well, sort of.
On December 5, the trivia quiz show announced the creation of a brand-new tournament featuring contestants from previous seasons. Set to air between February 20 and March 9 of 2023, 27 contestants will go head-to-head for a chance to earn $100,000 and a spot in the next Tournament of Champions. But there will also be a unique element that hasn’t been seen before. Each competitor will either be a current or recently graduated college student who once appeared on Jeopardy! while in high school.

When fans heard about Jeopardy!‘s upcoming venture, they immediately reacted in the comments on social media. Naturally, viewers were ecstatic.
“Awesome! Maybe it’ll feature past college tournament winners?” one person wrote on Instagram. “Can’t wait!!!” another follower exclaimed. “The hype is gonna be real!,” a different user added on Twitter.
As far as why this brand-new tournament was created, executive producer Michael Davies said in a statement to People: “We didn’t want to lose that sort of college energy … We knew we had these 27 players who are all of the college-age who come from our existing Jeopardy! community, so this was a great opportunity to bring them back.”
Among those who are set to return are two Teen Tournament Champion winners: Claire Sattler, a senior at Yale University who won her round in 2018, and Avi Gupta, a senior at Stanford University who clinched the top spot in 2019.
This news comes just a few weeks after Amy Schneider made 2022 Tournament of Champions history by being the first openly transgender contestant to not only qualify but to win the entire event. Earning the $250,000 grand prize, she had previously held a 40-game streak before it ended in late January.
