Homemade face masks have become essential items during the COVID-19 pandemic and now they’re more important than ever. The CDC recently changed its guidelines to say that everyone should wear some form of a cloth face covering in public places. If buying a mask or sewing one isn’t ideal for you, it’s surprisingly easy and Amanda Perna walks us through the steps to make a DIY face mask with materials you already have at home.

How To Make A No-Sew Face Mask With Hair Ties
**STEPS**
00:20 Find a piece of cotton fabric, 22″ x 22″.
00:30 Place paper coffee filter in the center of the fabric. (optional).
00:40 Fold fabric towards the center from the top and bottom, ends meeting at the center.
00:48 Add a twist tie for support in the center and about 1/4 of the way down from the top.
01:00 Fold fabric again over twist tie from top towards the center and then the bottom end towards the center meeting the edges at the center.
01:07 Loop hair ties over the unfolded long ends of each side of the fabric where your ears will be.
01:24 Fold fabric ends from the left and right towards the center securing and folding over the hair ties.
01:30 Tuck one fabric end into the other where they overlap.

**SUPPLIES**
2 elastic hair ties
1 piece of tightly-woven cotton fabric measuring 22″ x 22″.
Paper coffee filter (optional)

**STEPS**
02:06 Find a piece of cotton fabric, 22″ x 22″
02:18 Place paper coffee filter in the center of the fabric. (optional)
02:26 Fold fabric towards the center from the top and bottom, ends meeting at the center.
02:35 Add a twist tie for support in the center and about 1/4 of the way down from the top.
02:43 Fold fabric again over twist tie from top and then the bottom end towards the center meeting the edges at the center.
02:57 Place strings over the unfolded long ends of each side of the fabric where your ears will be.
03:24 Fold fabric ends from the left and right towards the center securing the strings by folding over them.
03:30 Tuck one fabric end into the other where they overlap.
03:43 Pull strings at either end tightly.
**SUPPLIES**
1 pair of clean shoe laces or two 36″ pieces of sturdy string.
1 piece of tightly-w oven cotton fabric measuring 22″ x 22″.
Paper coffee filter (optional)

How To Properly Tie A Face Mask
04:25 Bend the metal nose support and place mask over your nose and mouth.
04:40 Take the top ties and secure on the back of head and tie into a bow.
04:48 Repeat with bottom ties.

  2. I followed the instructions, however the hair ties fold my ears over and fall off. This mask does not stay on my face! Anyone have a clue why that's happening?

    I "stole" some rubber bands from work but I wonder if fishing line would work too. Heavy/Thick fishing line.
