If Yellowstone fans thought John Dutton was growing tired of defending his family’s land, Kevin Costner is shutting any doubts down.
Since the Western drama first premiered in the summer of 2018, folks have followed along as the Dutton family has fended off persistent land developers, learned to co-exist with the Broken Rock tribe and tried to negotiate with vocal environmentalists. What’s more, John has had to convince his children — Kayce (Luke Grimes), Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie (Wes Bentley) — to join him in the fight to keep their Montana ranch. Despite all his efforts though, the conflict for the land won’t get any easier in season 5, according to the Field of Dreams star.
While filming new episodes of Yellowstone, the Paramount Network actor opened up to Variety about what viewers can expect the Dutton patriarch to do next. From the sound of it, he might have to resort to more drastic measures.
“It’s been set up in a sense that there’s so much pressure on what’s coming for his land that he’s going to have to do something,” Kevin told the outlet. “We’re going to see what he did and does to stay ahead of it and I think that’s what John Dutton has to do.”
He continued: “But the pressures about the land have been, always for this family, [that they’ve] got to hold on to it with a level of violence … The walls pressing on [John] are environmentalists, the Native American issues, politicians, the public outcry for more land. So, he’s dealing with really modern problems.”

All that said, there have also been hints that John could continue mixing business with pleasure. As fans may remember, the Dutton patriarch became involved with environmental activist Summer Higgins, and actress Piper Perabo revealed that folks haven’t seen the last of her. She spilled that Yellowstone season 5 will probably feature scenes of Summer from jail. But who knows, John could find a way to get her out much to Beth’s dismay.
“The love story is kicking into gear on Yellowstone,” Piper told Entertainment Weekly in February. “I know a lot of people watch it for the cowboys and the ranch, but I watch it for the love story … We’re turning up the heat. It’s been a hard couple of years, let’s turn up the heat for a minute.”
